Casa das Mudas Art Centre

Calheta is home to the Casa das Mudas Art Centre which is Madeira's largest culteral venue and the third largest in Portugal. The centre was opened in 2004 and features works by Dali and Sir Francis Bacon. The centre also holds regular theatre, dance and artistic performances within it's auditorium which holds over 200 people.

Natural Seawater Pools

The natural seawater pools at Porto Moniz Madeira are a popular tourist attraction. The pools are formed on the seashore in the volcanic rock and allow visitors to bath and sun themselves, whilst buffered from the sometimes rough northern seas.

The Madeira Aquarium

Porto Moniz is home to the Madeira Aquarium where you can experience in close quarters 70 or so local species of marine life that live in the Madeiran seas. 12 thermatic tanks hold speacies such as sharks, Madeiran Rays, Stingrays, octopuses, starfishes and many more. There is also a shop, an exhibition hall, library with internet access, coffee shop and bar.

Santa Cruz Water Park - Aquaparque

Situated just south west of Santa Cruz, near Gaula, is the water park called Aquaparque. The park offers the usual selection of slides, tubes or black holes and rapids. There is also a zone for toddlers with fun slides and water features.

Madeira's Theme Park

Santana is also the home to Madeira's theme park - Parque Tematico da Madeira which allows visitors to explore Madeira's nature, traditions and history. The park offers many attractions such as a watermill, lake, children's playground, labyrinth, Monte train, auditorium, example A-frame cottages and much more.

Sao Vicente Caves

These caves, the largest known cave system on Madeira Island, were discovered in 1885 and are estimated to be over 890,000 years old and were caused by volcanic eruptions. A guided tour is available lasting 30 minutes. Adjacent to the caves is the Volcanism Centre where you can learn more about the formation of the caves via audio visual shows, models and interactive exhibits.

Reid's Hotel Funchal

The world famous Reid's Palace Hotel is a luxury five star hotel opened in 1891. The hotel is a conversion of a much older quinta and offers great views over Funchal's seafront. Whilst you'd need deep pockets to stay at Reid's it might still be worth having afternoon tea there on the terrace overlooking the sea.
